L to R: John, Mary, Eileen and Adrian Burt
ADRIAN BURT is proud of being a fourth generation menswear retailer. His great grandfather; Harry Trevethan Burt, trained at Kendal and Milne (Kendal’s) in Manchester before opening his own 'Hatters & Hosiers'. "I have been in the family business now for over twenty years, and I still find selling menswear an exciting, rewarding experience".

Founded more than one hundred years ago, in 1895, H T Burt continues to be a family-run business. For several years now Adrian's wife Eileen has enjoyed taking a more active role. "We have four lovely children who keep us very busy, but I enjoy working with Adrian and helping in various aspects of the business."

We have superb staff who have been with us for many years, and our shop managers are invaluable for their broad knowledge of the menswear business.

Fashions have changed considerably since the store first opened and, keeping apace with the latest trends, the name of H T Burt has remained synonymous with quality and style over the years. "We have an excellent collection of spring wear this season and colours are fresh and new—varying from shades of greens and blues to lavenders and lemons. There are of course the perennial favourites - navy, grey, and black - but," says Adrian, "we often introduce our customers to the new styles and trends we see at International Menswear Exhibitions such as the one in Cologne. We are discerning buyers and although we like to keep one step ahead of our customers, we do not want them to supply them with ‘one-season wonders’ which end up in the back of the wardrobe."

The shape of the suit, for example, has changed over the last few years and the emphasis is now on a cleaner, slimmer silhouette. Adrian feels that there is something special about having a unique suit, and perhaps that is why the Magee made-to-order suit has taken their business by storm.

Magee offer a turn-round of only 20 working days for specially-made suits in a wide choice of cloths and various designs. Magee is also part of the wide choice of ready-to-wear suits, which includes brands like Desch (for the man who prefers a traditional look) and Roy Robson for the more fashion conscious.

Men's Suits
Formal suits, jackets and trousers are just part of the shopping experience and casual wear is now an important section of the modern man's wardrobe. As Eileen says, "Good quality clothes allow a man to make a statement about himself and his lifestyle. We have a stylish range of chino style trousers from Bruhl in easy care, non-crease cotton, many with a comfort-fit stretch waist. Casual trousers from Bruno St Hilaire and Lapidus are very popular and are ideal for leisure and holiday wear."

The sports jacket is extremely popular and a 'must' in any man's wardrobe, and this season Magee, Desch and Roy Robson have excelled themselves in the cut, colour and style. Many of the lightweight jackets are in pure Italian wool and have that luxurious feel and quality which customers have come to expect from H T Burt.

Complementing suits, jackets and trousers for formal or casual wear is a comprehensive range of shirts. Eterna has always been a best seller," says Gordon, who manages and assists in buying. It is good to wear, has a generous cut, washes well and is non-iron." Alongside Teem, well-known brands such as Viyella and Seidensticker offer good quality formal shirts, while fashion ranges from other European design houses such as Mirto and Jupiter have a wide appeal.

It’s a fact: men are getting bigger! Unfortunately its a fact that seems lost on many of Britain's men's outfitters. "At H T Burt we have long recognised that men come in all shapes and sizes, so its no use stocking only 'popular' sizes like 38R. We have always offered a wide range of sizes in both shops," says Adrian, "which includes trousers up to 60 waist, suits up to 56 chest and our full colour range of shirts up to 20 collar".

"This year our knitwear is vibrant and Tundra, known for their unique style, present an explosion of colour. Gabicci is another firm favourite - helping our customers achieve that elusive 'sophisticated yet casual' look. Sizes go up to 4XL in most of our knitwear, meeting most customers needs."

A full range of accessories such as shoes, ties and belts can be found at both shops - many items suitable as gifts for Christmas, Birthdays and other Special Occasions. For those "difficult to buy for" men there's our Gift Vouchers.

H T Burt also provides a comprehensive Wedding Hire service,

When you visit H T Burt don't expect 'high-pressure' sales techniques and inexperienced sales staff who are there just to take your money - that's not what we're about. Instead, you can expect a warm, friendly and professional service from people who really know about menswear.
